Director of Horticulture

job description:

The Director of Horticulture is responsible for setting cultivation and grow standards that are to be uniformly adhered to throughout RWB’s state of Florida cultivation and grow operations to deliver quality and innovative product strains. They will be responsible for shaping the future of the company’s growing operations in addition to maintaining the company’s reputation and standards while implementing a dynamic growth plan. Ideal candidate is experienced in agricultural operations and ready to operate multiple cultivation operations on a commercial scale.

Accountabilities:

  • Oversee the growing operations for multiple locations
  • Develops and manages the annual departmental operating budgets and evaluates programs and projects to ensure maximum cost effectiveness
  • Create and manage schedules, cultivation processes, inventory, and vendor relations
  • Establish systems and chain of command to collect, analyze, and maintain data on cultivation operations to aid strategic planning and operational decisions
  • Serve as a role model and resource for staff with regards to products and services, policies and procedures, industry news, and changes in regulations
  • Consistently report cultivation status, verbally and in written form to all executive leadership/ownership
  • Attend weekly meetings to communicate status and directives
  • Frequent travel for facility inspections, media events, and other meetings as needed
  • Participates in the development, review and implementation of procedures to ensure the plants are consistently maintained at the highest possible standards
  • Research new techniques and insight and dedicated to expand knowledge
  • Will work closely with other managers and directors in order to execute the company’s overall strategy
  • Provides ongoing oversight of plant care
  • Manages all contract services for areas of responsibility.
  • Oversees the Integrated Pest Management program.
  • Ensures that best horticultural practices are applied, provides staff and intern training regularly.
  • Serves as a member of Leadership Team and acts as a positive leader for the organization.
  • Supports peers and staff in achieving overall institutional goals.
  • Serves as an external representative of the organization, a national leader in horticulture and as a liaison with key organizations to support achieving institutional goals

responsibilities:

  • Ensure optimal plant health while maximizing yields by maintaining proper pruning, plant training, and trimming processes and procedures
  • Ensure all the tasks are performed in the operation, including cloning, transplanting, feeding plants, defoliation, trellising, topping, flushing, foliar and preventative sprays, trimming, waste disposal and inventory management
  • Develop and execute preventative, naturally-integrated pest/disease control, maintenance and elimination of all types of mold, powdery mildew, spider mites, root aphids, fungus gnats, etc. with STRICT adherence to all state compliance and environmental safety regulation
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of all cultivation operations, plans, policies, and procedures (SOP) regarding propagation, plant care and IPM
  • Create and implement best practices for plant health and care – paying close attention to different cultivars’ specific needs
  • Select, appoint, and train staff on the operation of the cultivation facility’s automated tools, such as grow room temperature controls, lighting, watering systems and other infrastructure

skills:

  • Knowledge of large-scale commercial plant cultivation, including but not limited to, nutrient requirements, growing media, light requirements, temperature control, and airflow.

  • Experience with compliance systems.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially when dealing with plant health ad data-tracking.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with office and production employees.

  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to accomplish company objectives with either direct or indirect authority.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products and other related technical software programs.

qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in plant biology, physiology, biological sciences, or agricultural sciences, horticulture or agriculture management
  • Expert knowledge of plant diseases, insects and fungi, as well as plant treatment options
  • At least 5 years commercial grow experience
  • Knowledge of large-scale commercial plant cultivation including nutrient requirements, mediums, light requirements, temperature control, airflow, etc.
  • Experience managing a large-scale cultivation operation that has a clean history of compliance
  • In-depth working knowledge of cannabis plant symptom diagnosis, causality and remey applications
  • Advanced knowledge of hemp or cannabis plants and genetics
  • Must have accountability, proactive behavior and strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated personnel management experience
  • Experience in a position requiring critical-thinking, problem-solving, planning and assessment
  • Knowledge of cannabis policy and law
  • Must live in central Florida or be willing to relocate. Relocation Assistance available.
